The Charleston Ceramide Conference (CCC) was founded with the goal of bringing together laboratories from around the world whose common interests focus on sphingolipid research, especially, ceramide, sphingosine, sphingosine phosphate and ceramide phosphate. The CCC has adopted primarily a focus on graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and junior faculty, giving them a priority for presentations. Senior leaders in the field have provided direction, mentoring, perspectives, and the leading of discussions. The conference was organized to create a relaxed environment in which to foster a lively exchange of ideas and perspectives. The first CCC was held at the Wild Dunes Resort on the Isle of Palms in South Carolina November 14th to 17th, 2001, and it was attended by around 90 ‘sphingo’lipidologists. This was followed by the 2nd International CCC which was held in Lake Como, Italy in 2003 with approximately 145 attendees. The third CCC was held again in Wild Dunes on the Isle of Palms in 2005 with around 175 attendees. CCC4 was held at the Asilomar Conference Center in the Carmel area of California. CCC5 was held in the historic district of downtown Charleston, SC.
CCC6 will be held from March 16-20, 2011 in Villars, Switzerland, at the
